The Dangers of a Damaged Tooth
Our teeth are made of multiple layers. The outermost is enamel, a protective layer that defends the tooth against damage and harmful bacteria. The dentin beneath makes up most of the tooth structure. When a tooth is damaged bacteria can reach the dentin, causing decay to form. Unless treated the decay will eventually spread until it reaches the inner pulp, at which point an infection may develop. A root canal and possibly an extraction will then be necessary to protect surrounding teeth from the spread of infection.
Dental Bonding
Repairing a tooth is essential to protecting your smile’s overall health. For minor chips we may recommend dental bonding. The treatment can be completed in a single visit, restoring the lost tissue with a composite resin. The doctor first cleans the tooth and may gently etch the surface to let the composite resin better adhere to the tooth. The material cures under a special light while the doctor sculpts the tooth.
Dental Crown
While bonding works for minor damage, serious breaks or fractures may need a dental crown. The restoration fits over the entire visible part of the tooth, protecting the remaining structure from any further decay or infection.
