5 Ways To Boost Oral Health In 2016

leibowitzoralhealthWith a new year comes a list of resolutions. Have you made resolutions to get in shape or possibly improve your health? If so, then why not take steps to also improve your oral health as well? With the right information you can boost oral health in 2016, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease while also improving the appearance of your smile.

Boost Oral Health in 2016

  1. Change your diet: Drinks that contain high amounts of sugar or with a high acidic content, such as soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks, can lead to decay. In addition, foods high in sugar and other starches can also lead to the onset of cavities. Try drinking more water and adding healthier foods to your diet, such as fresh fruit and vegetables.
  2. See the dentist: You should see your dentist a minimum of two times every year. These routine visits will involve a checkup and a cleaning. The checkup allows the doctor to examine your teeth and gums for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, or other oral health issues. With a cleaning the doctor removes the plaque buildup from your teeth, which reduces the chances of enamel eroding or gums becoming inflamed.
  3. Brush properly: You should use a toothbrush with soft bristles. We advise against hard bristles as these can actually wear away enamel, causing tooth sensitivity. You should brush for a minimum of two minutes each session.
  4. Floss correctly: Flossing removes the food trapped between teeth. A toothbrush may reach these teeth. You should floss everyday before you go to bed.
  5. Don’t ignore possible warning signs: Remember, any sudden discomfort is often a warning sign of a serious problem. Don’t ignore soreness in your gums, tooth sensitivity, or toothaches. Instead, contact our office to schedule an exam.
