Do you have a tooth that constantly aches? Do you sometimes encounter tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks? These are often warning signs of a cavity. While tooth decay may seem like a minor oral health issue, without treatment complications such as dental infection can soon develop. In order to repair the tooth, the doctor places a filling. Do you need a filling?
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Fillings
Question: When do you need one?
Answer: We may suggest a dental filling if you have a cavity. Tooth decay occurs when the tooth enamel erodes and bacteria reach the layers of dentin, causing a cavity to form. Without treatment, the decay will continue to spread, increasing the risk of infection and possibly an abscess.
Question: What are they made from?
Answer: We offer restorations made from two different materials, silver and composite resin. The composite resin restoration is also known as a white filling because the material can be shaded to better blend with the tooth.
Question: What does placement involve?
Answer: For placement, the doctor will first remove the decay and then clean the area. He may also etch the tooth to allow the material to better adhere to the tooth. Then the material will be applied to the tooth and cured under a special light. The entire procedure takes a single visit and prevents further episodes of decay.
Question: How do I prevent future cavities?
Answer: In order to avoid future cavities you need to take better care of your teeth. Without exception, you should brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. We also urge patients to see us once every six months for a thorough dental cleaning. A cleaning helps remove plaque buildup, reducing the risk of enamel eroding and decay forming.
