We all need a checkup and cleaning every six months to keep our smile strong and healthy. However, we also need to clean our smiles from home in between these visits. In today’s blog, your Astoria, NY, dentist talks about how to properly brush and floss your teeth each day, and how to do so properly!
The Dangers of Poor Oral Hygiene
What happens when we don’t properly clean our teeth each day? Well, the particles of sugar and starch left behind by the foods and drinks could remain trapped on and between our teeth. Bacteria will then break them down, a process that elevates oral acidity and then coats the teeth in plaque buildup. This buildup will weaken and erode outer enamel, and also irritate and inflame the gum tissues. You’re then vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease, alone with bad breath and teeth stains. However, good oral hygiene habits could limit the amount of buildup that develops in between your cleaning appointments!
Brushing Your Teeth
You should brush your teeth every single day. Each session should take about two minutes, and should happen in the morning and again at night. Be sure to reach every available surface, approaching the teeth at a 45-degree angle to clean the tops and sides, and using circular motions for the front-facing ones. You can use an electric or manual toothbrush, we just suggest using one with soft bristles, as they prevent inadvertent enamel damage if you brush too hard. The toothpaste you pick is important too! Select one with fluoride, as this strengthens the outer layer of enamel and lowers the risk of erosion and decay. If you’re unsure of what kind to choose, look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance on the packaging.
Taking Time to Floss
What’s even more important than brushing your teeth? Flossing! This allows you to clean in between your teeth and remove the particles trapped there and along the gum line. Often, these could be beyond the reach of your toothbrush. You can use a pick or a water flosser, but most people opt for floss tape. Clean up and down each side of every tooth, dipping below the gum line when you do. This should be done every evening!
