How Are Dental Implants Different From Bridges And Dentures?

We offer a range of prosthetics to address tooth loss. One of the more advanced options, and one that is becoming increasingly popular for those with gaps in their smiles, are dental implants. How do implants differ from dental bridges or full/partial dentures?

Bridges and Dentures

A dental bridge addresses minor tooth loss, usually between one and three missing teeth in a row. They are usually held in place with dental crowns that are attached to the replacement teeth and placed onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Partial dentures address multiple missing teeth spread out across the arch. They are held in place with metal clasps, which connect to the natural teeth. Full dentures replace all of the teeth on one or both arches and are held in place with natural suction. On average, bridges last between 10 and 15 years, while dentures need replacement every 5 to 10 years. While effective, these solutions don’t offer the same benefits as dental implants.

The Dental Implant Difference

Dental implants don’t rely on natural suction, metal clasps, or crowns. Instead, they are made from a biocompatible titanium and are inserted into the jawbone. Through a process known as osseointegration, they bond with the jawbone, acting as new tooth roots. We then create a custom-made restoration to act as the visible portion of the tooth. We can address a single missing tooth, or replace multiple lost teeth by securing a prosthetic. Instead of lasting a few years, with proper care and attention you can enjoy a new tooth that lasts for decades, if not a lifetime. If you have any questions or concerns about addressing tooth loss, or about implant dentistry, then please contact our office today to discuss tooth replacement.
