Quiz: Learn More About Our Dental Fillings

We offer a number of different dental restorations to return the health and function to your teeth, while at the same time protecting them from serious complications. If you have a cavity, we may recommend a dental filling. In the past, these restorations were mainly made using amalgam. However, we can now offer a metal-free and more lifelike alternative.

  1. True or False: We recommend them for addressing tooth decay.
  2. True or False: We use lifelike materials to create them.
  3. True or False: They can prevent the onset of dental infection.
  4. True or False: For advanced decay, we may recommend a crown.

Answer Key

  1. True. We often use these restorations to repair teeth that have developed decay. If you notice a tooth feels sensitive to hot or cold foods/drinks, or that a persistent toothache has developed, then see your dentist right away. Discomfort could be a warning sign of a cavity, which require immediate treatment.
  2. True. We may use a number of materials to create one, such as gold or amalgam. However, we primarily use a lifelike material known as composite resin. Metal-free, this material can be shaded to blend with your tooth. After removing decay, we will gently etch the tooth. We then place the material and as it cures under a light, we sculpt and mold the tooth. Finally, we polish the tooth for a more natural appearance.
  3. True. When you place a composite filling, you stop the spread of decay. Bacteria no longer has an opportunity to come into contact with the inner pulp, which could lead to a painful infection and the risk of losing the tooth.
  4. True. If you decay has spread a filling may not be enough. Fortunately, we can also place a natural looking porcelain crown, which also addresses cavities and protects the smile from complications, such as dental infection.
