When a bridge or single dental implant isn’t enough to replace your missing teeth, then a denture could be necessary. In today’s blog, your Astoria, NY, dentist will discuss how we design and craft a set of full or partial dentures. A full smile is possible again, so you can pose for pictures with confidence, and also enjoy your favorite foods again.
The Dangers of Severe Tooth Loss
When a substantial number of your natural teeth become lost, this could leave major gaps. As a result, you could have trouble eating a variety of different foods, and speaking clearly could be problematic as well. You may feel embarrassed about your smile, and your remaining teeth could drift from position and lead to issues with misalignment. Addressing your tooth loss, even if you’ve lost all of your teeth, is crucial for maintaining a good quality of life.
Partial Dentures
If you have too many missing teeth to treat with a bridge, but not enough to require a full denture, then we could prescribe a partial. We begin by taking detailed impressions and images with digital scanning systems, using this information to design and craft a custom prosthetic. The denture will contain new teeth made from ceramic and set in an acrylic base that mimics the appearance of gum tissue. The ceramic can be color-matched to blend with the rest of your smile. Metal clasps will be used to connect the prosthetic to natural teeth and preserve your smile. These tend to last about 5 to 10 years on average!
A Full Set
If you’ve lost all of your teeth, or have only a few remaining ones, we could extract these last few and take detailed digital images and measurements of your smile. In a dental lab setting, we employ these materials to design and craft your custom prosthetic. This time, a full row of teeth is set into the acrylic base. Suction will keep the lower arch in place, and the upper arch denture may need the assistance of a special adhesive.
We will provide detailed instructions for cleaning and soaking them, helping them last. We can also treat any underlying oral health issues that caused your tooth loss. If you have any questions about how we treat missing teeth, then contact our team today to learn more.
