Our last blog discussed how a partial addresses multiple gaps in your smile. But what if you’re suffering from total tooth loss? When you lose several teeth, then we may recommend a set of full dentures. In today’s blog, your Astoria, NY, dentist talks about dentures, and how we can provide removable and implant options!
The Dangers of Complete Tooth Loss
When you lose the majority of your teeth, this could severely limit the kinds of food you can consume. As a result, this could deprive you of your favorite meals and essential vitamins and nutrients. The pressure on your jawbone could cause headaches and jaw pain associated with TMJ disorder. Speaking clearly could be difficult, and you could feel uncomfortable in social situations. Finally, your facial structure could change and appear prematurely aged as the bone tissue breaks down in your jaw following the loss of your teeth.
Removable Prosthetics
We have two options to secure a full set of dentures. Let’s talk about removable. These are secured with suction and adhesive, and need to be taken out occasionally for cleaning and soaking. On average, they tend to last about 5 to 10 years, requiring replacement as the shape of your jaw ridge changes with time. We create them based on detailed impressions and images taken of your smile. We combine these to create a 3D model, and craft your custom prosthetic in a lab setting. The denture will contain a base made from acrylic that is crafted to mimic gum tissue. The teeth are created from porcelain, absorbing daily forces and providing a natural appearance.
Implant Dentures
We could also support them with dental implants. The implants will act as new roots and be accepted by the body as such, which stimulates the growth of jawbone tissue. The bone tissue won’t break down, and this also preserves your facial structure and allows your dentures to stay in place for decades, possibly even a lifetime. We attach the custom prosthetic to the implants, they never need to be taken out for cleaning, and they also never slip when you eat or speak. The implant option does require oral surgery for placement, and we will need to make sure you have enough jawbone tissue to support the roots. Otherwise, your smile may need ridge augmentation or sinus lifts. But this is a more stable and longer-lasting option.
