Right now, our team is only offering emergency treatments for patients in Astoria, NY. We’re doing this to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of our patients and team members. But when should you contact us for treatment, what actually is a dental emergency? We’re going to look at some common examples in today’s blog!
Chipped, Cracked, or Knocked-Out Teeth
One of the more obvious emergency situations is a damaged tooth. When a tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken, then this compromises the layer of outer enamel, which typically safeguards the sensitive inner structure against harmful bacteria. As a result, this damage could lead to the onset of cavities, and over time, a dental infection or for some, a risk of a lost tooth. If you damage a tooth, let us know right away so we can schedule a time to see you. In the meantime, you can take a pain reliever to ease discomfort. A washcloth or gauze could be used to stem bleeding, and to reduce facial swelling you can place a cold compress or ice pack against the side of the face.
If a tooth is knocked-out completely, then pick the tooth up by the crown (never touch the root) and place it in a glass of milk or salt water and bring it to the office with you.
Unexplained Pain
What if you experience sudden pain in your tooth? First, rinse with warm water and then floss on either side of the aching tooth. If this fails to ease discomfort, then let us know. Often, serious pain is linked to tooth decay or even dental infections. If there is an object in between your teeth causing pain, and floss fails to dislodge it, let us know. Never use anything other than floss though, otherwise you could damage your teeth or gum tissue.
Loose or Lost Restorations
Should a filling or crown come loose or fall out, let us know right away. Bring the restoration with you in a small container or wrapped in tissue if it falls out. We can replace the restoration. In the meantime, try to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as the exposed tooth could be very sensitive. If you have any questions about responding to common dental emergency situations, or if you think you need to see us for treatment, then please contact our team. If you do need to visit, know that we will follow strict cleaning and disinfecting protocols to ensure the safety and health of our team members and patients!
