When Do You Need A Filling?

leibowitzfillingWhen do you need a filling? A common form of restoration that can be completed in a single visit, you may need one when you get a cavity. Otherwise, you run the risk of developing an infection. Made from a variety of materials, this restoration can help improve the health, function, and even appearance of your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fillings

Question: What causes tooth decay?

Answer: A cavity forms when bacteria reach the inner layers of dentin. The outer layer of tooth enamel typically protects these sensitive layers of tooth structure. However, damage or poor oral hygiene can weaken or erode the enamel, allowing bacteria to bypass it.

Question: How do I know if I have a cavity?

Answer: You may first notice sensitivity in your teeth to hot or cold food and drinks. Eventually, the cavity will progress until you experience a persistent toothache. If you experience chronic pain in your teeth then you should see a dentist as soon as possible for a diagnosis and to discuss treatment. Otherwise, the tooth may eventually become infected.

Question: How does a filling work?

Answer: A filling begins with the doctor removing the decay from the tooth. Then a composite resin will be placed inside the tooth. The doctor cures the material with a special light and then polishes the tooth. Once complete, the tooth looks natural and will be protected from harmful bacteria.

Question: What are they made from?

Answer: We use composite resin to create a filling. In the past these restorations were made using a metal mixture called amalgam. Now, we can place white restorations. The resin can be shaded to better blend with your teeth. The material contains no metal or mercury and is safe for patients of all ages. The entire placement process only takes one visit.
