How Does A Cleaning Help Your Smile?

leibowitzcleaningThe American Dental Association suggests all people have their teeth cleaned at regular intervals. We agree and encourage routine preventive visits to remove plaque and clean the teeth. How does a cleaning help your smile? If you brush and floss do you really need to have a dentist clean your teeth?

What Does the Procedure Involve?

A dental cleaning starts with the dentist or a hygienist removing plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the surface of the teeth. He will use either a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler device. The device employs vibrations to knock plaque loose. Afterward, the teeth are thoroughly polished. The polishing gives the teeth a smooth finish, one that makes it difficult for plaque to attach to. In conjunction with the procedure the doctor may also perform a checkup, in which he uses digital x-rays to carefully examine the teeth for signs of possible oral health concerns, such as tooth decay or oral cancer.

How Often Should I Have One?

We recommend a patient have their teeth cleaned twice a year, approximately once every six months. However, some patients may have common risk factors for gum disease. If so, then we may encourage them to see us more frequently, about once every three to four months.

What are the Benefits of a Dental Cleaning?

Fist, the procedure helps the esthetics of the smile. The cleaning brightens the teeth and can freshen breath. The treatment can also help prevent gum disease. Periodontal disease often forms as a result of plaque buildup. Brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque. Over time, the buildup inflames the gums and causes them to pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. Bacteria invade the pockets and lead to the onset of periodontal disease. By having the dentist remove the buildup frequently you can enjoy a healthier smile, one free of gum disease.
