Fabricating Your Lifelike Partial Dentures

astoria placing partial denturesWhen you have multiple gaps in your smile, often spread out across the arch, then you need a set of dentures. For these complicated cases, we will often craft a set of partials. In today’s blog, your Astoria, NY, dentist talks about how we design, craft, and secure a set of partial dentures.

When a Smile Needs a Partial

As we touched on above, this is for complicated cases of tooth loss too advanced for a bridge, but not quite severe enough to warrant a full set of dentures. This could mean more than one gap caused by tooth loss, with these gaps often across the arch from one another. A partial denture is designed to provide new teeth to fit comfortably in these gaps, preserving the alignment of your smile and restoring your ability to eat and speak without difficulty.

Creating Your Custom Replacements

When you see us for treatment, we will take detailed digital images of your smile and also identify underlying oral health issues, like gum disease, which we will manage as part of your treatment. The digital images allow us to create a 3D computer impression, which is far more accurate than old school physical impressions. In a dental lab, we use them to design and craft the new set of dentures. The prosthetic will contain an acrylic base that looks like gum tissues. There will also be new teeth, crafted from materials like ceramic to ensure a durable chewing surface and a lifelike appearance. We even shade them to blend with your smile.

Securing a New Smile

In most cases, these are removable dentures and metal clasps will attach to natural teeth to keep them firmly in place. These clasps will be invisible when you wear your partials. As the jaw ridge regularly changes shape, you will need to remove them every 5 to 10 years. However, if they’re instead attached to dental implants, this could stimulate the growth of jawbone tissue to prevent changes to the ridge shape. As a result, your prosthetic can last for decades to come. They will also be fixed in place, and won’t need to be removed for cleaning and soaking.
