Frequently Asked Questions About Treating Cavities

Question: What causes a cavity?

Answer: A cavity forms when bacteria can bypass the protective outer layer of tooth enamel, reaching the sensitive dentin beneath. The enamel can be become weakened by poor oral hygiene, allowing enamel to erode and cavities to form. Injury to the tooth, such as a fracture or chip, can also lead to the onset of cavities.

Question: How do I know if I have one?

Answer: You will typically experience discomfort, such as tooth sensitivity (especially to hot or cold foods/drinks) and toothaches that don’t subside after 48 hours. If you have persistent pain or sensitivity in your tooth, then talk to us right away. We can perform a diagnosis and if necessary, talk to you about treatment options.

Question: Will a filling help?

Answer: Often, we correct the problem with a composite dental filling. Also known as a tooth-colored filling, these contain no metal and can blend with your smile. The composite resin they are made from can also be color-matched to better blend with your tooth. With a filling, we can repair the tooth in just one visit.

Question: What if I have advanced cavities?

Answer: In some cases, the decay could be advanced enough that a filling isn’t enough. In this situation, we can place a crown that covers the tooth’s entire visible portion. We can address severe tooth decay, as well as injury to the tooth. We use a variety of materials to create them, including porcelain for front facing teeth and zirconia and porcelain-fused-to-metal for rear teeth.
