Last week, we looked at how fillings can target areas of decay and repair a tooth. Today, we’re looking a more substantial restoration with dental crowns. Instead of targeting a specific area of the tooth, the restoration actually covers the entire visible portion, allowing us to address multiple problems with a tooth’s function, health, and appearance.
Preparation and Fabrication
After examining your smile and deciding a crown is the best choice, we will move forward with preparation. We first remove a small amount of structure from the tooth, which makes room for the new restoration. We then take detailed impressions that will be used in a dental lab to fabricate the restorations. Once we have the completed restoration, you will return to the office for placement. We will choose one of a variety of materials, such as gold, porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and zirconia. The material we select will depend on where the crown is located and what levels of pressure they will be under.
Placement
We first check to ensure a comfortable fit. If necessary, we can make adjustments to the restoration. We then use a powerful bonding agent to attach the completed dental crown.
We can use them to address advanced decay, infection, or cracked/chipped teeth. We can also employ them to aid in tooth replacement, by anchoring a dental bridge or restoring a single tooth dental implant.
Maintaining Your New Dental Restorations
Once in place, you will need to continue caring for your smile to ensure the restoration provides decades of quality repair. You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss every night. We also recommend making time every six months to see the dentist for checkups and cleanings. If you have any questions or concerns then please contact our office.
