What Do You Know About Crowns?

leibowitz questions crownsWe offer a number of different restorations, each designed to restore a damaged or otherwise compromised tooth to full function and appearance again. Today, we’re looking at dental crowns. What do you know about crowns? We can use these restorations for everything from tooth repair to tooth replacement.

When Do We Need One?

There are a number of situations which call for a dental crown. They are strong and lifelike restorations that fit over the visible portion of the tooth, protecting it against further decay or infection. We can use them for cavities that are too severe for a dental filling, or to fix broken or fractured teeth. They can restore a tooth following a root canal or complete a single tooth dental implant. We can also use them to anchor dental bridges into place or even to correct esthetic issues with a tooth’s shape or color.

What are They Made of?

We actually use a number of different materials. For the more visible, front facing teeth we may suggest porcelain due to its lifelike appearance. For teeth that experience greater bite forces but are still visible, we may suggest porcelain-fused-to-metal. For the rear molars, which undergo greater stresses, we may suggest metal (for strength) or possibly zirconia (for strength AND a lifelike appearance).

How are They Placed?

Placement begins with preparation. To make room for the new restoration we must remove some of the tooth structure. Afterward, detailed impressions are taken and used by experts at a dental lab to design and fabricate the restoration. Once complete, you will return to the office for a second visit, in which we check the fit and make any necessary adjustments to the restoration. Finally, the crown is placed using a bonding material. If you have any questions about our crowns, then please contact our office today.
