Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Therapy

Question: When do you need one?

Answer: We recommend endodontic treatment when a patient develops a dental infection or abscess. The procedure allows the doctor to address the problem and prevent the need for a dental extraction. Without treatment, infection can eventually cause the tooth to die. At this point, the tooth requires extraction to avoid the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and into the jawbone.

Question: How are they performed?

Answer: First, the doctor must open the tooth and remove the infected tissue. Afterward, the inside of the tooth will need to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. A restorative material known as gutta percha will then be placed inside the tooth. Finally, the doctor completes the procedure by placing a dental crown over the tooth.

Question: Will the procedure be uncomfortable?

Answer: Prior to the procedure the doctor administers a local anesthetic. The patient can then enjoy a more comfortable experience. In fact, many patients find the procedure comparable to receiving a dental filling.

Question: How will my tooth look afterward?

Answer: Your tooth will look natural and healthy afterward. The crown is custom-made and created using lifelike materials. The result is a restoration that blends seamlessly with your tooth. Only the doctor will be able to tell you’ve received a root canal.
