At some point you’ve probably received a dental filling. After all, less than 2% of the population is immune to dental caries and this is the most common procedure for addressing a cavity. Let’s look at five facts about dental fillings and the warning signs that let you know that you may need treatment.
5 Dental Fillings Facts
- They can be completed in a single visit: The entire procedure can be done in one sitting. First, we may administer a local anesthetic and then we will remove any decay from the tooth. The filling material will be applied to the tooth and cured with a special light. After we cure the material we polish the tooth for a lifelike appearance.
- They look natural: We may use a composite resin when placing a filling. The composite material is metal-free and can actually be shaded to blend with surrounding tooth structure. Many people prefer these restorations as they look natural and aren’t as noticeable as traditional metal fillings.
- A filling can prevent further decay: Once we place the restoration bacteria can no longer reach the sensitive inner tooth structure. The filling protects the tooth from further decay and helps avoid the onset of an infection. The earliest indicators of a cavity may involve a toothache or tooth sensitivity, so see a dental professional if you experience sudden discomfort in your teeth.
- We use the same material to repair broken teeth: A dental bonding procedure allows the dentist to repair teeth that have become worn down, chipped, or broken. The bonding procedure involves placing several layers of composites and then molding the tooth as the material cures. As with fillings, the entire procedure can be completed in just one visit.
- We also offer metal restorations: For additional strength or if a patient prefers we may also place metal fillings. We offer restorations made from silver or amalgam. If you have any questions please contact our office today.
