Can a Crown Restore My Smile?

A variety of factors can compromise the strength of your smile, including trauma or advanced tooth decay. Can a crown restore your smile? We use these restorations to return a tooth to optimal strength and appearance. They can also aid in other restorative or cosmetic treatments.

What is a Dental Crown?

A crown looks like the visible part of the tooth. Also known as a cap, we place it over the tooth to strengthen it or restore lost tissue. We create them by first removing a portion of your tooth and then taking an impression. We send the impression to a dental lab, where a ceramist fabricates the crown. Once complete, you return to the office so we can check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. Finally, we place the crown using a bonding agent.

What Issues Do They Address?

We may suggest placing one to address a number of concerns. For example, we use them to repair chipped or broken teeth. They can be used to restore fractured teeth or placed following a root canal procedure. They aid in the replacement of lost teeth by either securing a dental bridge or completing a single tooth dental implant. We may offer a restoration to address cosmetic issues, such as misshapen teeth.

What are They Made From?

We use a variety of materials to create a restoration, including:

  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Zirconia
  • Metal

The material we use will depend on a number of factors. If the tooth is visible and near the front of the mouth, we may choose the all-porcelain option, as this is the most esthetically pleasing. If the teeth are in the back of the mouth, which means they encounter more serious bite forces, zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or simply metal may be the best choice.
