Do You Need A Bridge Or Implant?

If you lose a tooth you should discuss dental prosthetics with your dentist. We have options available to replace your missing tooth, such as a dental bridge or a dental implant.

The Dangers of Losing a Tooth

Why does losing just one tooth pose such a risk? First, a gap in your smile can often cause other teeth to drift from their positions. The resulting misalignment can make tooth decay and gingivitis more likely, as thorough brushing and flossing becomes difficult. In addition, tooth loss and misalignment can strain the jaw joints, often leading to the onset of TMJ disorder and/or bruxism. Finally, the body suspends the flow of calcium and phosphorus to the jawbone once it registers a missing tooth root. As the jawbone around the missing tooth loses density the risk of further tooth loss increases.

Dental Bridge

A bridge can be used to replace a single tooth or up to three teeth in a row, preventing misalignment and allowing you to enjoy a whole smile again. The prosthetic consists of the pontic, or replacement tooth, and two crowns attached to each end. The crowns are placed onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap, anchoring the pontic in place. The bridge can last between 10 and 15 years before requiring adjustment or replacement.

Dental Implant

A dental implant is inserted into the jawbone, acting as a new tooth root. This stimulates the growth of jawbone tissue, preventing the jawbone from losing density. The implant is then topped with a custom-made restoration, typically a dental crown. A dental implant can last a lifetime with proper care and attention.
