3 Possible Solutions To Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a disorder that involves soft tissues in the throat and mouth becoming too relaxed, subsequently collapsing and cutting off airflow, causing the brain to wake the patient, often hundreds of times per night. Soon, the client is sleep deprived, exhausted, and at a higher risk of complications, which can range from depression to hypertension. Fortunately, there are a number of possible solutions to sleep apnea.

Possible Sleep Apnea Solutions

  1. Oral Appliances: The most common solution we recommend is an oral appliance. The custom device will be worn as you sleep, fitting much like a regular nightguard. However, the device also moves the jaw forward slightly, which helps prevent soft tissues from collapsing and obstructing airflow. The patient can breathe without interruption and enjoy the deep rest needed to function properly during the day.
  2. Changes to Sleeping Habits: In many cases, lifestyle changes, such as how we sleep, can reduce apneic episodes. We may suggest sleeping on your side instead of your back. We also urge patients to maintain a regular sleep schedule, which means going to sleep and waking up at the same times every day, even on weekends. Finally, take a look at your bedroom. Is your room conducive to good sleep? We recommend a dark, cool room free of screens, such as TVs, computers, and phones. Remember, looking at a phone just before trying to go to bed and make going to sleep more difficult.
  3. Changes to Your Pre-Bedtime Routine: You should avoid vigorous exercise in the hour or two before bed, as this can make going to sleep difficult. In addition, drinking, which may make you feel sleepy, can often prevent REM sleep and therefore make you more likely to wake in the night or develop apneic episodes.
