If you have sustained a damaged tooth, this dental emergency requires immediate attention. Our team explains how to respond to the emergencies to help ease discomfort, and how we can repair your smile to prevent complications. In today’s blog, Jeffrey Leibowitz, DDS talks about emergency dental care in Astoria, NY, and how we can help restore your smile to full function, health, and beauty once again.
Common Emergencies and What to Do
What is a dental emergency? Well, this refers to an injury to the tooth or any pain that needs attention, but is not life-threatening. If you have a severe or life-threatening injury, contact 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room. Otherwise, call us! Examples could include a tooth that is cracked or chipped, or possibly broken. If you have one that is fully or partially avulsed (knocked-out), then you should see us right away. The same goes for a sudden ache, or something caught between the teeth or under the gums that floss cannot remove. If you have a crown or filling that is missing or lost, or a compromised prosthetic or orthodontic, then let us know!
You should rinse with warm water and apply cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding. With a cold compress, you can ease swelling in the face. An over-the-counter pain reliever is also helpful. We also suggest trying to recover any broken pieces of the tooth to bring with you. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up only by the crown, not the root, and put it in a sealed container of milk or salt water.
Seeing Our Team
Call our team right away. If you reach us during our usual operating hours, we will try to see you same-day or as soon as possible. If you call us and we are closed, then leave a message so we can reach out to you and discuss possible appointment times and tips for easing your initial pain.
Restoring Your Teeth
If a tooth is damaged, we could repair it in one visit with dental bonding, or we could even cap the tooth with a custom dental crown. Our team can also restore a knocked-out tooth to its proper place in your smile, and replace any compromised restoration or prosthetic as needed.
