Do You Need Bridges, Dentures, or Implants?

leibowitzquestion

When it comes to replacing missing  teeth you definitely have options. Whether you want to replace a single tooth or need a solution for multiple missing teeth, you can speak with a dental professional about achieving a complete smile once again. How do you choose the best option for your smile? Do you need bridges, dentures, or implants?

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge will bridge the gap between lost teeth. The prosthetic will consist of a new artificial tooth with a crown on each end. The dentist will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile, which we place the crowns on. The new teeth are then secured. The bridge will be fixed and can last as long as 10-15 years before requiring adjustment or replacement. A dentist may recommend this option to replace one or more teeth in a row.

Partial Dentures

What if you have lost multiple teeth that are spread out across an arch? Then  instead of a full prosthetic, a set of partial dentures may be the best choice. Partials consist of replacement teeth in a gum like base. Metal clasps are typically used to attach the prosthetic to the natural teeth although cosmetic clasps can be used as well for securing your replacement.

Full Dentures

A dentist may recommend this option if a patient is missing all or most of his/her teeth on one or both arches. As with partials, the new teeth are set into an acrylic base designed to look like gum tissue. They are held in place with natural suction or an adhesive. In some cases, they can even be secured with a set of dental implants for a fixed alternative. On average, they require adjustment once every 5 to 10 years.

Dental Implants

These are held in place with a surgically inserted implant post, which acts a new root. A crown will then be added to the top with an abutment, providing a secure option that can last as long as 25 years with proper care.

How Do I Choose?

In order to choose, talk to your dentist and schedule a consultation. Suring an exam, the dentist will take into account a number of factors to decide which prosthesis will best restore your lost teeth.
