Precautions To Take Before Treatment
While you should trust a dental professional to help with an emergency, there are actions you can take to ensure the best possible outcome:
- For a sudden toothache: A sudden toothache could stem from the presence of food lodged between teeth. Flossing can help with this, but if the pain persists after flossing contact our office to arrange prompt care. A cold compress placed against the cheek at the site of pain and swelling can help with discomfort.
- For a broken tooth: To address any bleeding that occurs, rinse your mouth with water and apply pressure with gauze. Bring the broken pieces of your tooth with you to your appointment.
- For a knocked out tooth: Only handle the tooth by its crown (the portion that resides above the gumline) and rinse it gently with cool water. You can attempt to place it back in its socket, but do so gently; if your attempt is not successful, put the tooth in a container of milk or saltwater to transport it. Your chances for the tooth’s successful return to its socket are greatest when treatment can occur within an hour of it becoming dislodged.
- For a lost filling or crown: Make treatment to have your restoration repaired or replaced as soon as possible. If you are not able to arrange prompt care, dental cement can be picked up at a local pharmacy to help temporarily hold the crown or filling in place until you can undergo care.
