If you chip a tooth, or suffer from an injury to your smile, then you’re experiencing a dental emergency. Provided the issue isn’t life threatening, you should let us know as soon as possible. We have the restorative and cosmetic treatments necessary to restore the health, function, and appearance of your injured teeth. In today’s blog, we’re looking at how Astoria, NY, residents should respond to a dental emergency.
The Danger of Damaged Teeth
When you damage a tooth, you compromise the protective outer layers of tooth enamel. Without treatment, even minor damage could mean exposing the sensitive inner layers of dentin to bacteria, leading to tooth decay and even the risk of infection. If you chip a tooth, try to pick up any pieces you can recover. If you cannot find the missing pieces of your tooth, don’t worry, we can still repair your smile. Use a cold compress against the side of the face to reduce swelling, and a piece of cloth or gauze to control any bleeding. See us as soon as possible, we may be able to repair your tooth in one visit with dental bonding. Now, if you sustain an injury and don’t see any damage, consider seeing us anyway for an exam. Remember, dental fractures are nearly invisible to the naked eye, but could lead to serious complications for your smile’s health!
Loose and Missing Restorations
If you notice a filling or crown is loose or missing, then see us right away! Damaged or missing restorations could expose the inner tooth structure, leading to tooth sensitivity and a greater risk of cavities forming. Try to avoid any sugary foods and drinks until you can see us. Also, cut back on very hot or cold foods and drinks, as these and sugary items could cause discomfort until your restoration is repaired or replaced.
Knocked-Out Teeth
If you knock out a tooth, don’t panic! Pick the tooth up, but only touch the visible portion, don’t touch the root. Try to rinse away any dirt or debris under gently running water, but try to leave any tissue in place. Next, attempt to put the tooth back into your socket, gently biting down to hold it in place. You can also place the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water. Bring the tooth with you to the office. A cold compress could help you avoid major swelling, and you may need cloth or gauze to stem bleeding.
