Lately, we’ve been looking at replacing a single lost tooth with bridges or a dental implant. But what about cases where a patient has lost multiple teeth, or even a majority of them? In these cases, we may recommend a denture. There are multiple options available to help address advanced tooth loss, which one will be right for you?
Partial Dentures
We use this option for cases in which a patient has multiple missing teeth, but they are spread out across the arch. They don’t need a complete prosthetic, so a partial is the perfect choice. The partial consists of an acrylic base (which looks like natural gum tissue) and replacement teeth made from ceramic or zirconia (strong and lifelike materials). There are also metal clasps, which will attach to natural teeth and anchor the new ones in place.
Full Dentures
If you’ve lost all of your teeth on one or both arches, then you need a full denture. Again, the base will be made to look like gum tissue. There will be a full row of teeth, also custom-made using natural looking materials. Instead of meta clasps, the denture will be held in place with natural suction (and in some cases, the assistance of a special adhesive).
Implant-Retained Dentures
Finally, we can support a prosthetic with a series of dental implants. These will not be removable, instead they will be fixed in place. The benefits include no slippage when eating or speaking, as well as a long-lasting prosthetic. Since dental implants stimulate jawbone growth and prevent the prosthetic (and the loss of nutrients due to tooth loss) from changing the shape of the jaw over time, the prosthetic can last much longer.
