How Do You Stop Grinding Your Teeth?

leibowitzbruxismFor most people, teeth grinding is a minor issue that subsides as quickly as it arrives, especially in children. However, for a few this issue can be a persistent, ongoing problem that threatens the health and stability of your teeth. Known as bruxism, millions of people experience a higher risk of damaged teeth and infection with chronic grinding/clenching issues. How do you stop grinding your teeth?

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a disorder that involves a patient grinding his/her teeth or clenching the jaw. The episodes often occur at night while the patient sleeps. The issue can be the result of stress, malocclusion, tooth loss, or the result of another jaw joint issue, TMJ disorder. Without treatment, persistent grinding can actually wear down enamel or possibly crack/chip a tooth, increasing the risk of decay and infection developing.

When Do I Need Treatment?

Since most episodes happen during sleep, you need to be aware of the common warning signs. Symptoms may include headaches, facial or jaw pain, toothaches/tooth sensitivity, and neck/shoulder pain. Don’t ignore these potential warning signs; see your dentist right away for a diagnosis and to discuss possible treatment options.

What Can I Do to Stop Grinding My Teeth?

You can make changes in your daily life to try and limit future episodes, like reducing your day-to-day stress and avoiding caffeine before bed. You can also stop chewing on hard objects, such as pencils, ice, or even gum, as the repetitive actions can actually exacerbate the problems.

The doctor can address other causes with orthodontics, tooth replacement, or possibly placing dental restorations. The doctor can also recommend an oral appliance. The device places a barrier between the upper and lower teeth to prevent further damage as a result of teeth grinding/clenching.
