Do you have an aching tooth? Have you chipped or possibly fractured a tooth? If so, then you may need restorative dentistry. These procedures are designed to restore damaged or decayed teeth, returning your smile to optimal health and function. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing a tooth to infection and endangering your smile.
When Do We Need a Restoration?
When a tooth becomes damaged, whether due to injury or possibly an untreated cavity, the risk of an infection forming increasing. In extreme cases, the tooth may require removal to prevent the spread of infection to surrounding teeth or the jawbone itself. You need a restoration to replace the lost structure and repair the tooth in order to avoid tooth loss.
What Restorative Treatments Do You Offer?
We offer a number of different restoration options, including:
- Fillings: A filling is often used to repair a cavity. We use a composite resin in lieu of metal for a more lifelike appearance. These fillings also tend to last longer and don’t expand over time like metal fillings, which can damage the tooth and cause decay to form again.
- Crowns: A dental crown fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth. They are made from a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. The material used will depend on the level of decay/damage and where the tooth is located.
- Root Canals: If you have an infection the doctor may recommend a root canal to avoid extraction. The root canal consists of removing the infected tissue, cleaning the interior of the tooth, and placing a special restorative filling. The procedure is completed with the placement of a dental crown, so the newly repaired tooth looks completely natural.
