Do You Have Difficulty Sleeping?

leibowitz sleep apneaWe need sleep to function properly during the day. Otherwise we can have trouble concentrating, feel moody, or even suffer health complications due to sleep deprivation. Do you have difficulty sleeping? If so, you may be experiencing a common disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Fortunately, we can discuss possible solutions to this disorder.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that leaves patients exhausted and deprived of the proper rest necessary to stay alert and active. The issue begins when the soft tissues in the mouth and throat become overly relaxed, collapsing and blocking airflow. The patient then stops breathing until the brain registers a sudden lack of oxygen and wakes them up. Patients often have no memory of waking, even though it can happen dozens of times per hour.

How Do I Recognize the Warning Signs?

First, one of the most common warning signs is daytime exhaustion, especially if you think you actually slept the night before. You may also be aware of episodes where you wake up choking or gasping for air. Other warning signs include snoring, depression, moodiness, and difficulty focusing on tasks. Eventually, the disorder can lead to complications, such as a greater risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack.

What Can I Do to Treat OSA?

In many cases an oral appliance can be prescribed and worn during sleep. Very similar to a nightguard, the device helps keep airways open by moving the jaw forward slightly. We can also discuss lifestyle changes you can make to ease symptoms, such as:

  • Losing weight
  • Sleeping on your side
  • Maintaining a regular sleep schedule
  • Avoiding alcohol or caffeine before bed
  • Keeping bedroom dark, cool, and free of distractions (such as a TV or computer)
