How Effective Are Your Teeth Cleaning Skills?

teeth cleaning skillsDo you brush your teeth at least twice and floss at least once every day? Hopefully, you do, and if so, then you’re on the right track to an excellent dental health regimen. However, simply going through the motions every day doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re doing a good job. To help ensure that you’re getting the most out of your toothbrush and floss, your Astoria dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Leibowitz, explores what constitutes good dental hygiene.

A Right Way, and a Wrong Way, to Brush Your Teeth

If you’re scrubbing a floor or a countertop, then a little elbow grease can mean the difference between clean and not-so-clean. When you’re brushing your teeth, however, forceful scrubbing can do more damage to your teeth than good. Harsh scrubbing can peel the protective layer of enamel off of your teeth, leaving them vulnerable and exposed to tooth decay-causing bacteria. Without adequate enamel, your teeth can also sustain structural damage (i.e., cracks and fractures) from everyday use. Be sure to brush your teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval.

The Power of Professional Assistance

Even with excellent, gentle brushing, your healthy smile still requires regular professional attention. You can help ensure that your mouth remains clean and healthy by visiting your dentist at least once every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. Dr. Leibowitz or one of our talented hygienists will thoroughly clean every surface of every tooth, as well as check for early signs of disease to increase your chances of avoiding dental diseases. We can also help you improve your hygiene routine at home with professional, case-specific tips and pointers, as well as recommendations for certain types of toothpaste and mouthwash.
