Why Do You Need Checkups And Cleanings?

leibowitzcheckupDo you brush your teeth daily and floss as recommended by your dentist and the American Dental Association? If so, isn’t that enough to protect your smile from cavities or worse? Why do you need checkups and cleanings? You may be surprised to learn just how important these seemingly trivial visits can be. With the right preventive treatments you can enjoy a healthier smile.

Checkups and Cleanings

These two procedures are very different but are typically performed in the same visit. The checkup involves the doctor examining the teeth and jaw for possible signs of trouble, which may include tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorder, or even bruxism (teeth grinding). A cleaning involves using either a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar (hardened plaque) from the surface of the teeth.

What are the Benefits?

There are a number of benefits to each of these preventive procedures. For checkups, benefits include an early diagnosis. The doctor can then recommend treatment before a problem can progress and endanger the health and appearance of your smile. A dental cleaning offers several benefits for your smile, including:

  • Reduced risk of gum disease
  • Lower chance of developing cavities
  • Fresher breath
  • Smoother feeling on the tooth surface
  • Brighter teeth

When Do I See the Doctor?

You need to see the doctor at least once every six months. However, if you notice any sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures or a toothache, then see the doctor right away for a diagnosis.

Remember, you should have your smile examined and cleaned even if you brush and floss. Brushing and flossing, even when done properly, can’t remove tartar from the teeth.
