Why do we need dental crowns? Occasionally, our teeth require restoration when they become damaged or endure severe tooth decay. To provide this service we often place a dental crown. Using a variety of materials we can address multiple situations in which your smile requires quality restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Question: Why are crowns placed?

Answer: When a tooth becomes chipped or cracked then a crown can restore the tooth. In addition, following a root canal procedure we can place one to make sure the tooth looks natural. If you lose a tooth, we can place them to anchor the new teeth into place or to top a dental implant to provide a lifelike replacement tooth.

Question: What are they made from?

Answer: We use a variety of materials. What we use to create your new restoration will depend on where the crown is being placed. The teeth near the rear of the mouth must withstand serious bite forces. For these, we may use metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia. For the teeth near the front of the smile we may use ceramic, as this material is stain-resistant and natural looking.

Question: What does the placement involve?

Answer: First, we prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of structure. An impression will then be taken. At a dental lab a ceramist will use the impression to design and create your new dental crown. Once complete, you will return to the office so we can place it using a bonding agent.

Question: How do I care for my new restoration?

Answer: Simply maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing daily. You should have your teeth examined and cleaned regularly as well. Doing so ensures your smile remains healthy and your restoration remains strong. If you have any questions, please contact our office today.
