Will Whitening Or Veneers Best Brighten Your Smile?

leibowitzwhiteningveneersOne of the more common cosmetic requests we receive concerns teeth whitening. Over time, a variety of agents can lead to the staining of our teeth. In order to correct the issue and brighten them we may need cosmetic dentistry, which could include teeth whitening or a restoration such as porcelain veneers. Which will best brighten your smile, teeth whitening or porcelain veneers?

What Causes Teeth Stains?

Did you know that there are actually two different forms of teeth whitening? Each is the result of different factors and may require different treatment options.

  • Extrinsic: These form on the surface of your teeth and respond well to traditional teeth whitening methods. Smoking, drinks with dark pigments (coffee, soda, red wine, and tea), and certain foods (high in sugar or containing staining agents, like certain berries) can lead to surface discoloration.
  • Intrinsic: These actually form below the tooth enamel. Some minor intrinsic discoloration may respond to teeth whitening. Others may require a restoration to mask the stains. Common causes include injury to the tooth, fluorosis, or tetracycline use.

The doctor will first examine your smile to assess the cause of your stains. He can then recommend the best treatment option.

Dental Veneers

If you have intrinsic discoloration then the doctor may suggest placing a veneer. Made from a thin wafer of porcelain, these are placed onto the front of the more visible teeth, masking stains and completely changing the appearance of the tooth. Porcelain is a strong and stain-resistant material that blends with the smile.

Teeth Whitening

We provide at-home teeth whitening, along with future office touch ups if necessary. The at-home system involves a set of custom-made trays and a bleaching gel. Each day the patient fills the trays with the gel and wears them for a certain amount of time. Optimal results typically take between a week and ten days. This works great for extrinsic stains.
