5 Steps For Cavity Prevention

leibowitz-cavity-preventionDeveloping a cavity is a serious oral health concern, one that can impact patients of all ages, from children to adults. Tooth decay can lead to discomfort, including tooth sensitivity and toothaches. In addition, without treatment decay may also progress into a dental infection. How do you prevent cavities? What steps can you take to safeguard your smile from tooth decay?

Preventing Dental Cavities in 5 Steps

  1. Avoid Sodas and Other Harmful Drinks: Water is great for you, keeping you hydrated and containing no harmful sugars. However, sodas and energy drinks contain a lot of sugar, which is broken down by bacteria to cause plaque buildup, eventually leading to decay. In addition, sports drinks are also highly acidic, weakening tooth enamel (the hard outer layer that protects your smile form cavities).
  2. Eat Heathier Foods/Snacks: We recommend adding more fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and dairy to your diet. In addition to being healthy, they are less likely to lead to decay. In fact, apples, broccoli, and carrots can actually help remove plaque buildup as you eat them.
  3. Brush Your Teeth Properly: You should brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again before you go to bed. We suggest using a soft bristled brush and reaching every available surface of your teeth. Each session should take no less than two minutes.
  4. Always, Always Floss: Flossing removes the food particles stuck between your teeth that toothbrush bristles can’t reach. As a result, flossing is essential for avoiding serious plaque buildup and protecting your smile from tooth decay and gum disease.
  5. Have Your Teeth Cleaned Twice a Year: Brushing and flossing can limit the amount of plaque on your teeth, but only a cleaning can completely remove the buildup. You should have a cleaning once every six months. If you would like to schedule a cleaning, then please contact our office today.
